This is Golan Shem-Tov, I am a Solution Architect on the Foglight Pre-Sales team, I've decided to write this blog after assisting a customer with adding a Foglight dashboard as a SharePoint web part.

Foglight Remote Web Part is a compatible Microsoft SharePoint Web Part, which is developed for the remote access to Foglight web console. There are two versions available in Foglight an ASP .NET 1.1 and .NET 2.0 version.

The .NET 1.1 version is located in   ${Foglight Server Home}/tools/foglight-sharepoint-webpart-dotnet-1.cab

The .NET 2.0 version is located in   ${Foglight Server Home}/tools/foglight-sharepoint-webpart-dotnet-2.cab

Installing the Web part
To add Foglight Web Part you need to user stsadm.exe as explained in this Microsoft article http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc288254.aspx

  Register the Web part

The instructions about registering Foglight Web Part may change depending on your SharePoint version, these are the instructions for SharePoint 2.0 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc287891.aspx

These are screen snapshots taken from Administrator using SharePoint 3.

- Choose Site setting

- Choose Web Part Galleries

- Click on the "New" Button in the Web Parts page.

- Select Quest.Foglight.SharePoint.RemoteWebPart from the list and populate the Galery.

The new Web Part will appear in the Gallery.

At this point all you have to do is add this web part to a page and configure its settings.

  • host - the Foglight Server host you would like to connect to.
  • port - the Foglight Server port you would like to connect to.
  • View ID - The Foglight WCF view ID you want to connect to
  •

  • You can choose a known view like servics ("system:fsmservicesexplorer.56") or alarms ("system:core_alarms.19") or you can get a reference ID of a dashboard from the dashbaord properties

I hope you find this Blog useful.

    Golan,

Please verify this would be similar if we were to run the portlets from say jboss or the apache portal products?

    Thanks,
    Eric

Re: Foglight dashboard as a SharePoint WebPart

    Eric,

You can add a Foglight portlet to a JSR 168 compliant portal.
What you typically have to do is take the following file ${Foglight Server Home}/tools/foglight-remote-portlets.war
and follow the instructions according to your portal ( JBoss - http://docs.jboss.com/jbportal/v2.6.3/referenceGuide/html_single/#d0e1928 ).
Once the portlet is successfully deployed, be sure to follow the user guide of your portal server regarding how to access its deployed portlets.
